Cefalù: The New Positano

Think back to when the Covid-19 travel restrictions were finally lifted. Where was the one place it seemed like everyone was going? Europe, right? Specifically Positano, Italy.

What if I told you this wasn’t Positano? Would you believe me?

It seemed like I couldn’t escape all of the Tik Tok videos or Instagram posts about girls taking their Euro Summer trips. While I may have been a bit jealous at the time, I finally got my Euro Summer this past summer, and it couldn’t have been more amazing.

Part of my family is from a little town in Sicily called Cefalù. I got the chance to visit this town over the summer, and it has become one of my favorite places I have ever been. The simplicity and beauty of the town, along with the small-town feel where everyone knows everyone just made me feel so connected with my surroundings.

Now, what do you think of when you think of Positano? Amazing blue water, cobblestone streets, rows and rows of Italian homes connected to the hillside, and so much more, right? Well, Cefalù has all of the same amazing qualities.

Cefalù’s homes are all made with stone and terracotta roofs. There was so much contrast between the bright blue water and the orange terracotta tiles, and it was truly a stunning site to see.

There are so many pictures of influencers in that bright blue, yet clear, Positano water. When in Cefalù, I found that the water was the same. There were no waves and it was the perfect place to get those European summer pictures.

Even the streets themselves were even amazing for photo opportunities, as the houses were built into cliffs lined with cobblestone streets. Everywhere you would look, there was just another breathtaking site to see.

The food, of course, was out of this world. Sicily is known for its seafood, and incorporates a lot of fish and other seafood, such as octopus. Another dish Sicilians are known for is called caponata, which is made out of eggplant, olive oil, tomato sauce, and olives. One of my favorite spots I tried while in Cefalù was called Le Chat Noir, and while the name of this restaurant is in French, their food was all Sicilian classics.

As many know, Positano is on the Amalfi Coast; the Amalfi Coast is known for their lemons. Well, so is Sicily. Some of the best Limoncello comes out of Sicily, with their signature drinks being a Sicilian Spritz, or simply just sipping on a shot of Limoncello.

After all of this, the last thing I have to say is you don’t have to go to the #1 trendiest summer destination to have your European summer moment. Branch out, find towns of your own, and you will have a story that no one else can tell!
