The Newest Accessory: Ribbons

Looking for a new way to jazz up an outfit? Look no further.

It’s the first game day of the season. You look around and you see one new accessory that every girl seems to be wearing. Whether it’s on their boots, in their hair, or anywhere in between, the new accessory of the season is ribbon.

Towards the end of summer, it seemed like ribbon as a hair accessory was popping up on everyone’s Pinterest feed, Instagram explore page or TikTok’s, “for you” page. Young, admirable women started incorporating ribbon into their daily outfits. Take the style icon Matilda Djerf as an example. She is a young clothing designer and owner of Djerf Avenue, an ethical clothing brand out of Sweden, and many girls look up to her and her fashion choices. She started wearing ribbon in her hair to add the finishing touches to her outfits. It didn’t take long for young Millennials and Gen Z to latch on to this new concept, let alone my fellow SEC girls.

So, going back to the first game day, there were so many ways girls were incorporating ribbon into their long-awaited game day outfits. There was mixing and matching of garnet and black ribbon, different patterns of ribbon, different materials, all the works.

How can it be that a little garnet bow completes the entire rest of your outfit? Ribbons add the perfect amount of youth and playfulness to an outfit. They bring the girliness out of an otherwise plain black dress with cowgirl boots.

One of the cutest ways I am seeing girls use ribbon on game day is by tying it around the loops of their cowgirl boots. It is my absolute favorite way to wear my boots now. Kamryn Bailey, a junior at the University of South Carolina, had an adorable game day outfit on Parent’s Weekend - of course, completed by ribbons (pictured below).

“It’s just a super affordable way to add more school colors to an outfit,” said Kamryn when asked what her thoughts were on the new trend.

And this couldn’t be more true. Ribbon at Michaels can cost anywhere from two to eight dollars, and that’s for a whole roll. This trend is perfect for those who want to spice up their game day outfit but want to do so on a budget. Not only is the ribbon cheap, it is going to last you the whole season; possibly longer!

Next time you are thinking about what you could possibly do to make your outfit more fun, try adding some ribbon! Throw it in your hair, around your belt loops, or even use them as laces in your shoes. Creativity never goes unnoticed; what you come up with might even be the next big trend.
